Tribological behavior of PEEK components with compositionally graded PEEK/PTFE surfaces

چکیده
PEEK is a high strength engineering thermoplastic that suffers from a high friction coefficient and a friction induced wear mode. Past studies with 0 m PEEK and PTFE powders resulted in composite solid lubricant that (at the optimal composition) had a wear rate of k= 2× 10−9 mm3/Nm ith a friction coefficient of μ= 0.12. A compositional grading of PEEK and PTFE is implemented in this study to create a bulk composite with he functional requirements of component strength, stiffness and wear resistance while providing solid lubrication at the sliding interface. The ribological performances of three functionally graded PEEK components were evaluated on linear reciprocating, rotating pin-on-disk and thrust asher tribometers. Wear rates comparable to samples of the bulk solid lubricant and comparable or improved frictional performance were achieved y compositionally grading the near surface region of PEEK components. 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Hierarchically constructed metal foam/polymer composite for high thermal conductivity
Most polymeric tribological components are inherently insulative, resulting in susceptibility to failure from frictional heating at the PV limit, which is typically reported as a product of the heat flux terms pressure (P) and sliding speed (V). This letter reports on the design of a tribological composite for increased thermal conductivity and PV limit. The control sample is an unfilled compos...
متن کاملInvestigation of Wear Behavior of Biopolymers for Total Knee Replacements Through Invitro Experimentation
The average life span of knee prosthesis used in Total Knee Replacement (TKR) is approximately 10 to 15 years. Literature indicates that the reasons for implant failures include wear, infection, instability, and stiffness. However, the majority of failures are due to wear and tear of the prosthesis. The most common biopolymer used in TKR is Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE). Pr...
متن کاملTribological Behavior and Mechanical Properties of Graphene/PEEK Composites
PEEK has been implemented in various orthopaedic applications due to its many beneficial mechanical, tribological, and radiolucent properties. These properties can be further tailored by introducing fillers into the PEEK matrix. In this work, graphene has been incorporated due to its high mechanical resistance, intrinsic stiffness, and lubricating properties [2].
متن کاملA low friction and ultra low wear rate PEEK/PTFE composite
This paper presents a PEEK filled PTFE composite that exhibits low friction and ultra-low wear. It is hypothesized that a synergistic effect shuts down the dominant wear mechanism of each constituent. The friction coefficient and wear rate of this composite material on lapped stainless steel were evaluated for samples with PEEK wt.% of 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 70 and 100 using a linear recipro...
متن کاملFriction and Wear Performance of Glass Fiber Reinforced Poly-Ether-Ether-Ketone Composite against Different Polymer Counterparts
In tribological applications, because of the corrosive problems of the metals in water applications, poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) and its composites are preferred for rubbing materials. As it is known PEEK is a high performance semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer and has received significant attention in recent years. This is due to its high mechanical strength and elastic modulus, high to...
